Stanwix Medical Centre, Carlisle

Currently submitted for planning and expected to receive determination in November 2011 and comprising 3No. medical practices, the new Stanwix Medical Centre will provide flexible modern facilities to replace current inadequate facilities for the provision of primary healthcare in the 21st century. The Primary Care Centre is also a response to central government policy of increasing primary care facilities in the communities which they serve, lessening the reliance upon hospital care.

It is proposed that the new primary care centre is constructed on Eden Street within the curtiledge of the former Belah School. This is a short distance from the existing Stanwix Medical Centre at the heart of the community which it serves. The site is currently owned by Cumbria County Council and is bounded by residential properties and development land.

The proposed Primary Care Centre has a footprint of 823sqm and consists of two storeys of accommodation. To reduce the scale of the development the roof space has been utilised to house the plant room and associated equipment.

Throughout the design process the user group and Primary Care Trust have been consulted to ensure the correct level of accommodation is provided.
